Artistical Links
between Rembrandt and Jacob
The artistic tradition passed from Rembrandt to Jacob.
Apart from a family relation between Rembrandt et Jacob (Jacob's ancestor, Willem Hendrik Hasius, was Rembrandt's uncle) an artistic line between Rembrandt and Jacob also exists, which, for instance, can be followed by the master-apprentice relations.
In the XVIIth century, there were more than one line of artistical influence fom Rembrandt to one of Jacob's ancestors, the painter Gerrit de Hoogh.
Line 1) The artist Caspar Netscher was a friend of Gerrit de Hoogh, as well as of the painter Gerard Uylenburg, Saskia Uylenburg's uncle, Rembrandt's wife.
Line 2) Gerrit de Hoogh's wife's father's uncle, Jan Bastiaens van Mieris, was a carver of rubies.
His son, Frans van Mieris, was a painter, whos works were collected by the most prestigeous museums in the world, like the Louvre in Paris.
Frans van Mieris was a pupil of Gerard Dou, considered to be Rembrandt's best pupil.
Hermanus van Eyck, Jacob's direct ancestor, thus was the cousin of the best pupil of Rembrandt's best pupil!
Starting from Gerrit de Hoogh, one will find no less than three consecutive generations of artists/painters among Jacob's ancestors, who have passed their know-how:
- Gerrit de Hoogh
- Frederik Barnards
- Louis Hendrik Barnards
Louis Hendrik's daughter's son-in-law, Gerrit van Vugt, became a painter at the dutch royal court. His own son-in-law, Johannes Jurrien Scheffer makes (most probably) part of the Scheffer family, which members worked at both the dutch and french royal courts.
One finds numerous marriages between the members of the families van Vugt, Scheffer, du Chatinier et Avink, who worked as artists at the royal court. For details, please click here.
The Avink, van Vugt and du Chatinier families are related by several marriages to the Geradts family, notably by the marriage Henri Geradts with W.S.E. du Chatinier.
Henri Geradts is the uncle of Jacob's grandfather (G.W.Th Geradts). Henri also had a cousin Wilhelmus Nicolaas Geradts, decorator of carriages, who produced three consecutive generations of artists/painters:
Wilhemus Nicolaas Geradts I
Cornelis Geradts and his brother Wilhelmus Nicolaas Geradts II
Franciscus Bernardus Geradts
