For a long time, it wasn't very clear where the zest for painting in the Van Vugt family came from.
Recently, after the publication of the book "Haagse Schilders uit de Gouden Eeuw" (Painters of The Hague in the Golden Age) it seemes that the wife of Gerrit van Vugt, comes from a family of painters, Scheffer/Barnars.
Before this book was printed, much attention was focussed on a Rotterdam painter, Gerrit van Vucht (about 1610-1697).
Several of his works have survived, for instance a still-life with fruit (Municipal Museum of Schiedam) and a painting in Poznan, Poland.(SD)
Little is known about him. Lacking details, he is mentioned in the archives of the painters' Guild in Amsterdam (1669-1678). He is also to be found in a certificat (1-11-1664), together with his sister Margrieta and his father Jan Goverts, living in Schiedam.
Elsewhere the two parents are mentioned: Jan Goverts (died =< 1664) and his mother IJefje Jans (died 15-9-1662 Kerkstraat).
The book on the The Hague painters (p285) mentions another painter in Rotterdam: Johannes (or Jan) van Vucht (Rotterdam 1603-1637) who worked in The Hague.
Investigations, made by Jacob showed that these two painters were related. Probably, they were even brothers.
Jan Goverts et Yefje Jans witness the baptism of a daughter (Anna) of Johan van Vucht and Annege Geerets in 1624/27. In 1626 Iefge Jans witness another time. The last child, Eva, is born in 1636, a year before the death of the painter Jan van Vucht.

Despite this progress, it's still incertain if/how the great-grandfather (Symon Gerritse van Vugt) of the court-painter (Gerrit van Vugt, born in IJsselmonde 19-2-1706) was relalated to the two painting brothers in Rotterdam. The first names are similar and the presence of two families around Rotterdam are a strong indication.
